Jurgen Klopp confirms Liverpool FC’s interest in 18-year-old
The Liverpool FC boss admits the Reds were interested in Borussia Dortmund sensation Jadon Sancho
Jurgen Klopp has confirmed Liverpool FC were interested in Jadon Sancho – but admitted the Reds didn’t have a chance in the race to sign the English teenager.
The 18-year-old has been a revelation in his second season at Borussia Dortmund after his move to German football from Manchester City in 2017.
Sancho opted to turn down a new contract at the Eastlands outfit to pursue a top-flight career in the Bundesliga.
The England Under-21 international’s decision has paid dividends after establishing himself as one of the most exciting talents in the German league.
Sancho has scored seven goals and has made nine assists in 23 games in the Bundesliga this term.
His performances for the Bundesliga leaders has prompted transfer speculation linking the English forward with a potential move to Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea FC, Tottenham and Liverpool FC.
Asked about Sancho ahead of Liverpool FC’s clash against Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 clash on Tuesday night, Klopp said:
“Buying English players is a smart idea because we would never have a chance to get Sancho.
“We are not blind – we saw him, we liked him and then we think ‘Can we get him?’ No. Because English clubs don’t sell to other English clubs.
“I don’t know exactly what the reason is for that but they don’t do it. Now they can go to Germany which is a wonderful league.”
Sancho moved to Borussia Dortmund in an £8m deal from Manchester City in the 2017 summer transfer window.
He made 12 appearances in the German top flight in his first season at Westfalenstadion.
However, Sanchez has flourished at Dortmund this season and has played a key role in the title push.
