Michael Owen states his prediction for Lyon v FC Barcelona
The Liverpool FC legend is tipping FC Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi to get on the score sheet in a win over Lyon on Tuesday night
Michael Owen is backing FC Barcelona to continue their unbeaten record against Lyon in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
The Spanish side haven’t lost to the French side at OL Stadium ahead of the first leg of their round of 16 clash.
FC Barcelona were 6-3 aggregate winners against Lyon in their previous meeting in the Champions League knockout stage.
Messi got on the score sheet in a 5-2 home win at Camp Nou after FC Barcelona were held to a 1-1 draw in the first leg in France.
The Argentina international is FC Barcelona’s leading goal-scorer this season after 22 goals in all competitions, netting 13 times in his last 12 outings.
Lyon booked their place in the Champions League round of 16 for the first time in seven seasons after finishing behind Manchester City in their group.
Ironically, the Ligue 1 side haven’t won a round of 16 fixture since Lyon eased to a 2-1 victory over FC Barcelona’s bitter rivals Real Madrid in 2009-10.
Former Liverpool FC striker Owen is backing FC Barcelona to ease to a straightforward win against Lyon on Tuesday night.
“Barcelona were singularly unimpressive in beating Real Valladolid at the Nou Camp on Saturday and I am not convinced they are playing as well as their seven-point lead at the top of La Liga would suggest,” Owen told BetVictor.
“Both Lyon and Barcelona were unbeaten in the Group stages although the French side have drawn their last five Champions League games and conceded 11 times in their six ties.
“Lionel Messi has scored 90 times in his last 90 Champions League games and the Argentinean magician might again be the difference.”
FC Barcelona have won the competition on five previous occasions after a 3-1 win against Juventus in the Champions League final in 2015.
The Spanish side are sitting at the top of La Liga ahead of Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid.
