Sky Sports pundit opens up about Alexis Sanchez at Man United
Paul Merson runs the rule on Alexis Sanchez and his poor performances for Manchester United
Alexis Sanchez has lost his “hunger” following his poor form at Manchester United, according to Paul Merson.
The 30-year-old has struggled to produce consistent form for the Red Devils since signing for Manchester United from Arsenal in the January transfer window last year.
Sanchez has failed to hold down a regular spot in the first team this season due to form and fitness issues, and he has only started six Premier League games so far.
He failed to make an impact when he came on as a substitute in Manchester United’s 2-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last week.
Sanchez’s performances of late have been a far cry from his talismanic displays for Arsenal in the years leading up to his move to Manchester United.
And Merson seems to think that Sanchez has lost some of the “hunger” to succeed.
Speaking on Sky Sports News on Saturday, Merson said: “I hope we see the old Sanchez, but I don’t see the confidence or the hunger in his eyes anymore.
“The first thought that used to come to mind when you mentioned Alexis Sanchez was that he worked his socks off, he put a shift in.
“For the quality he possesses as a player, he works as hard as anyone, but I don’t see that anymore.
“Sanchez has lost that hunger and it’s a shame. It’s sad because he was good.”
Manchester United are currently preparing to travel to Chelsea FC in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Monday night.
The Red Devils are in fourth place in the Premier League table as they chase Champions League qualification under interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
