Chris Smalling believes that Manchester United will be “ready to challenge” for the Premier League title next season.

The Red Devils have enjoyed a dramatic turnaround in form in recent weeks since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was brought in as the club’s interim manager following the sacking of Jose Mourinho back in December.

Manchester United have won all but one of their Premier League games under the Norwegian to leave them in fourth place in the table as they chase Champions League qualification.

They did suffered their first defeat under Solskjaer on Tuesday night when they were beaten 2-0 by Paris Saint-Germain at Old Trafford in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 clash.

It remains to be seen who will be in charge at Old Trafford at the start of next season, with the club yet to make an official announcement about their next permanent manager.

However, Manchester United centre-half Smalling clearly feels that the Red Devils will be in a good position to challenge for the title next season regardless.

Speaking in an interview quoted by Sky Sports, Smalling said: “It takes time to get there but the last couple of months our evolution has been really good.

“We’ll go over there (to Paris) and give it everything because it is far from over and then next season kick on especially in the league because I think, come then, we’ll be ready to challenge.

“I think with the change we’ve had we will hopefully be able to finish the season with a trophy and get into the top four but that’s not our aspiration every year just to get into the Champions League.

“If we can keep playing how we are now and keep improving I think a big summer with pre-season is going to be the one where we’re the top dog hopefully.”

Manchester United finished in second place in the Premier League table last season under Mourinho but without a trophy.

The Red Devils will take on Chelsea FC in the fifth round of the FA Cup at Stamford Bridge on Monday night.
