Nemanja Vidic claims Virgil van Dijk wouldn’t get in Man United team
The Man United legend makes a controversial claim about Liverpool FC defender Virgil van Dijk and his defensive colleagues
Nemanja Vidic has claimed that Liverpool FC star Virgil van Dijk wouldn’t command a place in the Manchester United team.
The Netherlands international has established himself as one of the best defenders in the Premier League over the past 12 months or so.
Liverpool FC made Van Dijk the most expensive defender in the world when the Reds spent £75m on the Southampton centre-half.
The 27-year-old has made a big impact at the Anfield outfit and Van Dijk’s influence has helped Liverpool FC to challenge for the title.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have the best defensive record in the Premier League and the Reds have kept more clean sheets than any other top-flight side.
However, Vidic suggested Liverpool FC don’t have any defenders that would get into the Manchester United side.
“I think [Lindelof] had a difficult time in the beginning,” Vidic told Omnisport, as quoted by Metro.
“Well done to him to come back. It’s not easy, especially playing for Man United, big club, to not start that well and have criticism from the media.
“To come back from that and now perform well, it shows some character as well, which is important if you want to play for Man United.
“I think Phil Jones did well in the recent games he played, Chris Smalling is a good defender, [Eric] Bailly as well. I think we have four solid defenders and with the right match I think they can perform to the best of their capabilities.
“Overall, I said even before when they didn’t have great games, if you look at the other teams, I would not have any defenders of Liverpool or Chelsea, I don’t think they have better defenders than we have.
“I think now the team is playing better, they have more confidence and there will come even better matches from them.”
Van Dijk was part of the Liverpool FC side that lost 3-1 to La Liga giants Real Madrid in the Champions League final last season.
The Reds only lost to Manchester City in their opening 26 games of the Premier League campaign.
Van Dijk will return to the Liverpool FC team for the second leg of their round of 16 clash against Bayern Munich on 13 March.
Klopp’s side played out a goalless draw with the Bundesliga side last week.
