According to the same story, Manchester United will face competition from Serie A champions Inter Milan at the end of the season.
The Red Devils could have some ground to make up in the race to sign Rakitic given that Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport are reporting that Inter Milan have already spoken to the Croatian, as quoted in the same report.
The 30-year-old has scored 31 goals in 254 appearances in all competitions over the past five seasons since his move to FC Barcelona from Sevilla in 2014.
The FC Barcelona midfielder has won three La Liga titles, four Copa del Rey trophies and the Champions League during his spell at Camp Nou.
Manchester United are struggling with an injury crisis after Ander Herrera, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard were forced off in the first half of their 0-0 draw with Liverpool FC last weekend.
The Red Devils haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013.
