Ole Gunnar Solskjaer outlines what Man United summer signings must have
The Manchester United interim manager discusses the attributes that any summer signings must have
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Manchester United will only look to sign players who have “the X factor” in the summer.
The Red Devils have managed to bounce back from a difficult opening half of the Premier League season to challenge for a top-four finish.
Manchester United appointed Solskjaer as their new manager after the 20-time English champions sacked Jose Mourinho following a 3-1 loss to Liverpool FC.
The Norwegian head coach inherited Manchester United in sixth place and 11 points behind fourth-placed Chelsea FC.
However, the Red Devils are currently in fifth spot and two points adrift of Maurizio Sarri’s side following seven victories and one stalemate in the league.
Andy Cole predicted that Manchester United will provide their manager with a significant transfer budget in the summer, irrespective of who is in the Old Trafford hot-seat.
Speaking to Sky Sports about what kind of signings he would be looking to bring to the club, Solskjaer said:
“Me and Mick (Phelan) came in and of course we wanted to bring a confidence into the players that we trust them because we do.
“They are here because they are special. Manchester United never sign players if they don’t have any uniqueness or X factor about them. We should never forget what badge they are wearing because they are special.
“So we speak to them and encourage them individually but giving players confidence by speaking to them is one thing. They need to feel this is working. They have done it by themselves. They scored the goals against Cardiff and enjoyed it. That gave them a big boost, of course.
“You have to find a way to win a game. That’s not up to me or Mick or Kieran (McKenna) or Michael (Carrick) to tell them beforehand. Every game is different. We might score the first goal and it’s a different game. They might score the first goal and it’s a different game. So they have got to make decisions out there based on their experiences and qualities.”
Manchester United will take on Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League round of 16 next week.
The Red Devils will host the French champions in the first leg at Old Trafford next Tuesday.
Solskjaer’s side will warm up for their crunch European clash with a trip to Fulham in the Premier League on Saturday lunchtime.
