Manager claims reported Man United target can be ‘new Paul Pogba’
Lyon manager Bruno Genesio likens Tanguy Ndombele to Man United midfielder Paul Pogba to fuel transfer speculation
Tanguy Ndombele can become the new Paul Pogba, according to Lyon manager Bruno Genesio.
The Ligue 1 side have been fending off reported interest from Manchester City and Manchester United in the powerful midfielder.
Reports in the British media over the past couple of months have suggested that the two Manchester clubs are set to battle it out for the Lyon star’s signature.
The 22-year-old has made four assists in 24 appearances in Ligue 1 this season to attract interest from some of Europe’s top clubs.
While the Lyon star has earned comparisons to Chelsea FC legend Michael Essien in the past, his manager at Lyon has now likened him to Manchester United’s talisman.
“I do not like comparisons, but indeed, Ndombele can be a new Pogba,” Genesio told Tuttosport, as quoted by the Daily Star.
“He is strong physically and above all technically.
“Tanguy with the first touch manages to jump even three players and when he starts dribbling he is difficult to stop.
“He can play in any position in the midfield.
“He started scoring, but in the future, I expect him to develop at the goal level. He must become a midfielder with 8-10 goals per season.
“Tanguy Ndombele will become a leading midfielder.
“I would not be surprised to see Juventus, but I would like to enjoy him a little more here at Lyon.”
Ndombele has established himself as one of the most promising box-to-box midfielders in French football since his move to Lyon at the start of the 2017-18 season.
The 5ft 11ins midfielder caught the eye in his first season at Lyon as he featured in 28 games in the French top flight.
Manchester City are well aware of his talent after Ndombele featured in the Lyon side that were 2-1 winners against the defending Premier League champions in the Champions League group stage this term.
Ndombele earned his first France cap back in October and has made a further three appearance for the world champions.
