Granit Xhaka has admitted that Arsenal need to secure a return to the Champions League.

The Gunners have failed to finish in the top four to qualify for the competition in their last two Premier League seasons.

Arsenal had the chance to secure a Champions League spot by winning the Europa League in Arsene Wenger’s final campaign in charge last term.

However, the north London side fell short after a 2-1 aggregate loss to Atletico Madrid in the Europa League semi-finals.

Arsenal are in fifth spot in the Premier League and a point behind Manchester United following a solid first season under Unai Emery.

The former Sevilla manager has won the Europa League on three occasions and has successfully led Arsenal to the round of 16 where they will face Rennes next.

And Xhaka has now underlined the importance of Arsenal finally securing a return to the Champions League after a two-season absence.

“After Arsene Wenger left, a lot of things changed at this club,” Xhaka is quoted as saying by Sky Sports. “We are happy with the coach and we have improved a lot, and we work a lot.

“It will be a big step if we return to the Champions League. We want to. It’s not easy but we will keep working.

“Of course it is important. Two times in three years we did not play in the Champions League and a club like Arsenal has to play in the Champions League.

“We need to show that on the pitch.”

Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby on Saturday afternoon.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang missed the chance to score a winner from the penalty spot with minutes to go after Harry Kane’s spot-kick cancelled out Aaron Ramsey’s opener.

Arsenal’s stalemate allowed Manchester United to hoist themselves above Arsenal after their 3-2 win over Southampton.
