Gary Lineker reacts to Virgil van Dijk’s goal in Liverpool FC’s 3-1 win at Bayern
The BT Sport pundit was full of praise for Liverpool FC star Virgil van Dijk after his decisive header sealed their place in the Champions League quarter-finals
Gary Lineker praised Virgil van Dijk for his decisive goal after the Liverpool FC defender netted a precise header in a 3-1 win at Bayern Munich on Wednesday night.
Sadio Mane has been instrumental in maintaining their title challenge in recent weeks, with a return of eight goals in nine Premier League games.
Mane started on the left side of the Liverpool FC attack and the 26-year-old managed to break the deadlock in the 26th minute with his second Champions League goal of the season.
The Liverpool FC number 10 deceived Manuel Neuer with a deft touch before Mane lifted his finish over the retreating Bayern defence to break the deadlock.
Bayern were level before half-time when Joel Matip diverted the ball into his own net under pressure from Poland international Robert Lewandowski.
However, Van Dijk managed to get on the end of James Milner’s corner and place a finish past Neuer.
There was still time for Mane to score his second of the night after Mo Salah’s brilliant cross found his fellow African star.
Former Tottenham striker Lineker praised Van Dijk for his winning goal in the last-16 tie.
Lineker posted on Twitter: “What a header from @VirgilvDijk and @Liverpool are close to the quarter finals. Very close.”
The BT Sport host was impressed with Mane’s opening goal in the first half at the Allianz Arena.
Lineker wrote on Twitter: “Sensational from Mane and a huge goal for @LFC 👏”
Liverpool FC haven’t won the Champions League since 2005 when they beat AC Milan on penalties. The Reds have lost to AC Milan and Real Madrid in subsequent Champions League finals.
Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund side lost 2-1 to Bayern Munich in the Champions League final at Wembley in 2013.
