Paul Merson is backing Chelsea FC to return to winning ways against Cardiff City on Sunday afternoon,

The Blues will be looking to bounce back from the disappointment of a 2-0 loss to Everton at Goodison Park in their last Premier League fixture.

The defeat on Merseyside was their seventh of the season in the Premier League to leave Maurizio Sarri’s side three points adrift of the top four.

Chelsea FC are in sixth place and have ground to make up on both Arsenal and Manchester United in the race to secure a Champions League spot.

However, the west London side will take on the Premier League’s 18th-placed Cardiff, who have only managed to win eight times in the top flight this term.

Former Arsenal midfielder Merson is confident that Chelsea FC will ease past the Bluebirds on Sunday afternoon.

“This could be a big weekend in the race for the top four,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“I see Chelsea winning, they will have just too much for Cardiff, and that will leave Spurs needing to get a result at Liverpool. Some of Cardiff’s home results recently have been alarming and they’ve come against lesser teams than Chelsea.”

Chelsea FC appointed Sarri as Antonio Conte’s successor last summer after the Blues ended up in fifth spot in the Premier League table.

Sarri made an impressive start as the Stamford Bridge outfit managed to remain unbeaten in the English top flight until the end of November.

However, the west London side endured a difficult December, January and February to fall off the title race pace.
