Sky Sports pundit: Chelsea FC owner could play role in Callum Hudson-Odoi’s future
Charlie Nicholas believes Roman Abramovich may decide to go down the youth route at Chelsea FC in the future
Charlie Nicholas believes Chelsea FC owner Roman Abramovich could yet play a role in Callum Hudson-Odoi’s future.
The Blues teenager has been one of the big positives in a difficult first season under Italian manager Maurizio Sarri.
However, Chelsea FC are facing a battle to keep Hudson-Odoi at Stamford Bridge after Bayern Munich made a number of unsuccessful bids in January.
The League Cup runners up were thought to have turned down an offer in the region of £35m for the England Under-21 international.
Hudson-Odoi has so far refused to sign a new contract with Chelsea FC and his current deal is set to expire at the end of the 2019-20 season.
Sarri has used the 18-year-old sparingly throughout the 2018-19 season, despite the youngster’s obvious talent.
Hudson-Odoi has scored four goals and has made one assist in four starts and nine substitute appearances in the Premier League this season.
Chelsea FC have been handed a transfer ban from Fifa that means the Blues will be unable to sign new players in the next two transfer windows.
Former Arsenal midfielder Nicholas believes Abramovich may decide to encourage his manager to give youth a chance should their appeal prove unsuccessful.
“I think he’s made up his mind, the lad,” Nicholas told Sky Sports News on Saturday. “I think he just wants out.
“Players can look at different situations, they can look at Sarri.
“Is he going to be there? If he goes, then a new manager, who’s that going to be? Will he like me? Will he give me a better chance?
“Chelsea are getting to decision time I think in the summer.
“If they don’t win anything, don’t make top four, then there’s a big rebuild job to come.
“We just don’t know whether this owner might change, he might flip it and say ‘I’m fed up spending all this cash, I want some younger players, I’ll take a younger coach in and we’ll build’.
“Some of the Chelsea players came out this week saying he [Hudson-Odoi] will be a world star’.”
Chelsea FC are looking to secure to a return to the Champions League this season after finishing in fifth place last term.
