Ryan Giggs believes that Ethan Ampadu is suffering from “growing pain” after the Chelsea FC starlet pulled out of the Wales squad.

The 18-year-old has been forced to withdraw from the national team squad with a back issue and will therefore miss the friendly against Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday and Sunday’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Slovakia.

Ampadu – who signed a new long-term contract at Stamford Bridge in September – has only made a total of five appearances in all competitions for Chelsea FC so far this season, and he has not made a single appearance in the Premier League so far.

And Wales boss Giggs has now underlined his belief that Ampadu may be struggling with growing pains at a crucial stage of his development.

Speaking in an interview quoted by the Evening Standard, Giggs said: “It is frustrating. He’s at that age where it’s in between his age group and the first team. So a lot of the time he’s travelling with the squad.

“I went through it a little bit, when you don’t play, then you go back to your own age group.

“It’s just that balancing act because he’s not getting the minutes that lesser players would get because of his quality.

“He reminds me of Steven Gerrard because he’s still growing. They pick up these little knocks and strains.”

Meanwhile, Chelsea FC are currently sixth in the Premier League table after they were beaten 2-0 by Everton on Sunday.

The west London side will return to Premier League action after the international break when they travel to Cardiff City on Sunday 31 March.

Chelsea FC will take on Slavia Prague in the quarter-finals of the Europa League next month.
