Michael Owen states his prediction for FC Barcelona v Lyon
Michael Owen looks ahead to FC Barcelona's Champions League clash with Lyon on Wednesday night
Michael Owen is backing FC Barcelona to secure their place in the Champions League quarter-finals by beating Lyon at Camp Nou on Wednesday night.
The Spanish giants are looking to progress through to the last eight of the Champions League as they look to continue their strong form in Europe.
The two sides played out a goalless draw in the first leg last month but FC Barcelona will now be the heavy favourites to secure their spot in the quarter-finals.
And former Liverpool FC star Owen feels convinced that the home side will have enough to secure their spot in the last eight of the Champions League at the expense of the Ligue 1 side.
Writing in his column for BetVictor, Owen said: “Barcelona have won all three home games against Lyon in the Champions League by an aggregate score of 10-2 and I can’t see past another win for the Spanish giants although their lack of an away goal is a slight concern.
“Lyon have drawn their last six games in the competition, but I expect Barca to make it through to the last eight for an extraordinary 12th year on the run – a magnificent achievement.
“Lyon have lost their last four away games without scoring a goal in the knockout stages of the competition and I feel the hosts will be comfortable winners at the Camp Nou.”
Both FC Barcelona and Lyon are unbeaten in this season’s Champions League campaign.
The most recent of the sides’ six meetings before the first leg came in the 2008-09 round of 16, when FC Barcelona won 6-3 on aggregate en route to lifting the trophy.
After a 1-1 draw in Lyon, the Spanish club were 5-2 victors at the Camp Nou, with Lionel Messi scoring the third goal. Gerard Pique also played in both games, with Sergio Busquets featuring at the Stade de Gerland.
