Liverpool FC give injury update on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain after comeback scare
The Liverpool FC midfielder's return from injury for the Under-23 side was cut short after an injury scare
Liverpool FC will assess Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s muscle injury after his comeback for the Under-23 side ended prematurely.
The England international hasn’t played any competitive football since sustaining a serious knee problem in a 5-2 victory over AS Roma in April 2018.
Oxlade-Chamberlain has been working on his rehabilitation from injury over the past 11 months as Liverpool FC challenge for a first Premier League title.
The 25-year-old was scheduled to play 45 minutes of Liverpool FC Under-23’s clash against Derby County in Premier League 2 on Friday night.
However, Oxlade-Chamberlain was substituted five minutes before half-time with a suspected muscle problem after the England star had been clutching his right hamstring.
Liverpool FC Under-23 manager Neil Critchley confirmed that Oxlade-Chamberlain had felt a small niggle and was replaced as a precautionary measure.
“He obviously had a bit of an issue but hopefully it’s nothing major,” Critchley told Liverpool FC’s website. “The bonus for him is that it’s not his knee, so he’s delighted there are no problems with that.
“He was enjoying himself, he was happy to be back playing. Hopefully when he wakes up in the morning, fingers crossed it’s nothing and only a precaution.
“The idea was only ever to play him for 45 minutes at most anyway. He nearly got that, as well.
“Hopefully it’s not as bad as it first looked. He was looking over [to the bench] and we weren’t sure. It’s maybe some kind of muscle problem and maybe one to assess tomorrow.
“What was good is that he was sensible. He came off quite quick. He has handled that situation quite well.”
Liverpool FC signed Oxlade-Chamberlain in a £40m deal from Arsenal on transfer deadline day in the 2018 summer transfer window.
The England star took a couple of months to settle before he started to produce some excellent performances for the Merseyside outfit.
Oxlade-Chamberlain netted in Liverpool FC’s 4-3 victory over Manchester City in the Premier League and their 3-0 win against Pep Guardiola’s side in the Champions League quarter-finals last term.
Liverpool FC will be eager to get Oxlade-Chamberlain back on the pitch given their lack of creativity in midfield in recent months.
