Pundit: Liverpool FC’s Virgil van Dijk better defender than Rio Ferdinand
Irish pundit Kevin Kilbane claims Liverpool FC's Virgil van Dijk has already surpassed Rio Ferdinand as a defender
Liverpool FC talisman Virgil van Dijk is a better defender than Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand, according to Kevin Kilbane.
The Netherlands international has been a revelation at the Merseyside outfit since Liverpool FC signed Van Dijk in a £75m deal from Southampton in January 2018.
The world’s most expensive defender has managed to help Jurgen Klopp overhaul Liverpool FC’s leaky defence with his leadership at the back.
Liverpool FC’s remarkable turnaround is highlighted by the fact that the Reds have the best defensive record in the Premier League this term.
Van Dijk and his Reds team-mates have kept 17 clean sheets in the current campaign, while the Dutch centre-half has scored four goals and made three assists in 38 games in all competitions.
Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand is generally regarded as one of the best – if not the best – defenders in the Premier League era.
However, ex-Everton defender Kilbane believes that Van Dijk is on course to surpass Ferdinand as a better all round centre-half.
“He’s going into the territory of the being the best defender I’ve seen live,” Kilbane told Irish radio station Newstalk.
“Liverpool have had Hansen but Van Dijk controls the game from his position. It’s amazing to see him.
“I think he’s getting into that territory along with top defenders like Rio Ferdinand and John Terry. Van Dijk has more to his game than Ferdinand.
“He is a better passer, he is more aggressive when he needs to be and he has that calm streak about him. Potentially, he’ll be better than Ferdinand.”
Liverpool FC made Van Dijk the most expensive defender in the world when the Reds signed the Netherlands international in a £75m deal.
The Dutch centre-half was part of the Liverpool FC team that lost 3-1 to Real Madrid in the Champions League final last term.
