Jamie Carragher replies when asked if Liverpool FC star is the best in Europe
Liverpool FC legend Jamie Carragher explains why he thinks that Virgil van Dijk is the best defender in Europe
Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool FC centre-half Virgil van Dijk is the best defender in Europe.
The Netherlands international has been attracting a lot of praise for his composed performances at the heart of Jurgen Klopp’s defence this term.
Van Dijk has managed to raise the performance levels of his team-mates as Liverpool FC challenge Manchester City for the Premier League crown.
Liverpool FC had an inconsistent defence that was one of the worst in the top six before Van Dijk’s arrival in a £75m deal from Southampton in January 2018.
The world’s most expensive defender has transformed Jurgen Klopp’s back four, with help from summer addition Alisson Becker.
Van Dijk has added goals to his repertoire in recent weeks with a return of three strikes in his last five games in all competitions.
Asked by the Anfield Wrap whether Carragher felt like Van Dijk was Europe’s best defender, the Sky Sports pundit replied:
“I do actually. With the performances he has given this year I think he’s been the best player in the Premier League. I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t win PFA Player of the Year.
“When he first signed there were maybe raised eyebrows at the amount but if somebody offered you double now you probably wouldn’t take it, that’s how good he has been.
“He is at a great age and we know centre-backs go on a bit longer, so hopefully we’ll see him for the next decade.”
Liverpool FC made Van Dijk the most expensive defender in the world when the Reds swooped to sign the Dutch star from Southampton almost 15 months ago.
Klopp had to be patient in his pursuit of the former Celtic defender after Southampton threatened to report Liverpool FC to the FA over their attempts to sign Van Dijk in the 2017 summer transfer window.
