Jamie Carragher: Liverpool FC star deserves PFA player of year award
The Liverpool FC legend tips Virgil van Dijk to win the PFA player of the year award this season
Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool FC defender Virgil van Dijk deserves to win the PFA player of the year award this season.
The Netherlands international was immense at the back for Jurgen Klopp’s side in a frenetic Merseyside derby at Goodison Park on Sunday.
Van Dijk didn’t become unsettled by the testing weather conditions and Everton’s direct approach in the goalless stalemate.
The Liverpool FC record signing won an incredible 10 headers and made two successful tackles during the Premier League clash on Merseyside.
Klopp’s men have the best defensive record in the Premier League, having conceded 15 times in 29 games this term.
Alisson Becker has also managed to keep 17 clean sheets in his first season in English football, undoubtedly aided by Van Dijk’s presence in the back four.
Former Liverpool FC defender Carragher tipped Van Dijk to win the PFA player of the year award.
“Van Dijk’s performance today was unbelievable,” Carragher told Sky Sports.
“I think he should be PFA Player of the Year. Maybe it’s too early for that, but today, if he’s not playing, I think Everton win the game.
“He looks like a man playing in a kids’ game. He’s playing against some of the top players in European football in the Premier League, but everything is so easy.
“You actually feel like he’s not getting tested enough. You still feel like there are more gears for him to go into.”
Liverpool FC signed Van Dijk in a club record £75m deal from Southampton in the 2018 January transfer window.
The Netherlands defender has already played in one Champions League final since his move to Liverpool FC from the Saints.
However, Van Dijk was powerless to prevent Liverpool FC from suffering a 3-1 loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League final.
Liverpool FC will host Burnley in their next Premier League game on Sunday.
