Ex-Liverpool FC star: Virgil van Dijk needs silverware to become club legend
Former Liverpool FC midfielder Jason McAteer outlines what Virgil van Dijk must achieve to become a club legend
Virgil van Dijk will need to win silverware at Liverpool FC to be considered one of the club’s greatest-ever centre-halves, according to former Reds star Jason McAteer.
The Liverpool FC record signing has helped Jurgen Klopp to transform the Liverpool FC defence over the past 12 months or so since his £75m move from Southampton.
Van Dijk has brought a calmness to the Liverpool FC back four after some frenzied defensive performances under both Brendan Rodgers and Klopp over the past four or five seasons.
The Merseyside outfit have the best defensive record in the Premier League this term after conceding a mere 18 goals in 31 outings.
The Netherlands international has earned favourable comparisons to Liverpool FC legend Alan Hansen over the past season following his talismanic performances at the back.
However, former Republic of Ireland international McAteer believes Van Dijk won’t go down as a true Liverpool FC legend unless the Dutch centre-half wins silverware at Anfield.
“To be a legend and the best ever, you’ve got to win things and have longevity,” McAteer told Irish radio station Newstalk.
“There has to be a balance. His performances this season have been immense. He has the potential to be the best.”
Liverpool FC are in top spot in the Premier League table and two points ahead of Manchester City.
The Reds will take on Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield next Sunday.
