Jamie Redknapp names Liverpool FC’s most important player in title race
The Liverpool FC legend underlines the importance of Virgil van Dijk in the Premier League title race
Jamie Redknapp has warned Jurgen Klopp that Liverpool FC won’t win the title if the Reds lose Virgil van Dijk to injury in the remaining months of the season.
The Netherlands international has been instrumental in their title challenge following his club record move to Liverpool FC from Southampton in January 2018.
Van Dijk has added some much-needed composure to Klopp’s defence and the £75m signing has managed to get the best out of players such as Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson.
The 27-year-old has already been touted as a PFA player of the year contender given that Liverpool FC have the best defensive record in the league this season.
Klopp’s side have only conceded 15 times in 28 games in the English top flight and have kept 16 clean sheets, more than any other Premier League team.
And former Liverpool FC captain Redknapp admitted that the Merseyside outfit’s title challenge would suffer a critical blow should Van Dijk succumb to injury.
“It is so difficult to separate these teams but lose Van Dijk now and Liverpool cannot win the title,” Redknapp told the Daily Mail when asked who he thinks the key player for Liverpool FC is in the run-in.
Van Dijk has certainly been a regular fixture in the Liverpool FC team this season. He has scored three goals and made one assist in 28 Premier League games for the Reds heading into this weekend’s round of games.
Liverpool FC are sitting at the top of the Premier League with a one-point advantage over defending champions Manchester City.
The Citizens will take on Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday before Liverpool FC make the short trip to Everton for Sunday’s Merseyside derby.
Manchester City are the only Premier League team to beat Liverpool FC in the top flight this term.
