Clinton Morrison believes that Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane are two of the prime contenders to win the PFA player of the year award this season.

Van Dijk has been in sensational form since moving to Liverpool FC from Southampton in the January 2018 transfer window and he has been earning lots of praise for his solid performances at the back for Jurgen Klopp’s men.

The Netherlands international has helped the Reds to stabilise their defence to build a serious challenge for the Premier League title.

Meanwhile, Mane has also been in fine form at the other end of the pitch for the Merseyside outfit.

The Senegal international has scored 17 goals and made one assist in the Premier League this season and he netted the opener in Liverpool FC’s 2-1 win at Fulham on Sunday.

Now, former Crystal Palace star Morrison has stated his belief that the two Liverpool FC stars are likely to be big contenders for the PFA award this season.

Speaking to Sky Sports, as quoted by the Daily Express, Morrison said: “I think he [Mane] is a contender [for the PFA award].

“Obviously I think Van Dijk has been outstanding but Mane’s been brilliant. He is more natural in front of goal [now].

“I’ve looked at him a lot this season and the easier chances, sometimes he snatches at them and misses them.

“And when he gets the difficult chances, he puts them away.

“But he is in a rich vein of form, you ask any defender, they will not like to play against Sadio Mane.

“He can go either way, inside, outside and nine times out of 10 he delivers.

“His assists are up there as well, he contributes a lot of assists and he scores a lot of goals.

“He’s got a great chance of being up there for the awards.

“But I just think the season Van Dijk has had, he might just win it.”

Liverpool FC will return to Premier League action after the international break when they take on Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday 31 March.

The Reds are currently two points clear at the top of the table after having played a game more than Manchester City.
