Gary Lineker has taken to social media to praise Liverpool FC for “doing what they had to do” after their 4-2 win over Burnley moved them back to within one point of Manchester City.

The Reds headed into Sunday lunchtime’s game four points behind the Citizens, who had beaten Watford 3-1 at The Etihad on Saturday afternoon.

Ashley Westwood scored for Burnley in the sixth minute at Anfield, but Liverpool FC soon bounced back and two goals from Roberto Firmino and one from Sadio Mane made it 3-1.

Burnley pulled a goal back in stoppage time through Johann Berg Gudmundsson, but Mane netted his second of the afternoon shortly after to secure the points.

The result leaves Liverpool FC second in the table and a point behind the defending champions with eight games left to play this season.

And England legend Lineker seems to be convinced that the title race will go down to the wire this season.

Lineker posted on Twitter after the final whistle: “Liverpool doing what they had to do. Reckon this title race is going to the last game of the season. Hope so.”

Liverpool FC will return to Premier League action on next weekend when they travel to Fulham on Sunday.

Before that, they will travel to Bayern Munich for the return leg of their Champions League last 16 tie on Wednesday night.

Manchester City, meanwhile, will not be in Premier League action again until Saturday 30 March, when they travel to Fulham, because of their involvement in the FA Cup next weekend.
