Rio Ferdinand has admitted that it would be “painful” to see Liverpool FC win the Premier League title this season.

The Reds are currently top of the Premier League table as they look to try and beat Manchester City to the top-flight trophy this term.

Liverpool FC are two points clear of defending champions Manchester City but have played a game more than Pep Guardiola’s side.

They will return to Premier League action after the international break when they host Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday 31 March.

Ferdinand knows a thing or two about winning the Premier League, after having lifted the trophy six times during his decorated spell at Manchester United.

However, the former Red Devils defender has admitted that it would be difficult for him to see Liverpool FC win the Premier League title this term.

Speaking in an interview with the Daily Mirror, Ferdinand said: “There’s fans I didn’t even know supported Liverpool that have come back out of the wood work after 20 years of being silent that are starting to speak before they’ve won anything.

“It’d be a lot more painful to see them win the league [over Man City], but listen, the best team will win it and whoever that is well done.”

Liverpool FC have not yet won a major trophy since Jurgen Klopp’s appointment at Anfield back in October 2015.

The Merseyside outfit will take on FC Porto in the Champions League quarter-finals next month as they look to go one step further in Europe’s elite club competition than they did last season.
