Paul Merson states his prediction for Liverpool FC v Burnley
The Arsenal legend believes Liverpool FC will beat Burnley at Anfield on Sunday afternoon
Paul Merson has warned Jurgen Klopp that Liverpool FC are facing a must-win game against Burnley at Anfield on Sunday.
The Reds will be looking to return to winning ways against Sean Dyche’s side this weekend to avoid dropping more points in pursuit of a first Premier League crown.
Liverpool FC played out goalless draws at Manchester United and Everton in two of their last three Premier League games.
Manchester City have capitalised on Liverpool FC’s stuttering form to reclaim top spot in the table and wrestle back control of the title race.
The Merseyside outfit have drawn four of their last seven fixtures, with Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino having struggled to rekindle their prolific form.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson emphasised the importance of Liverpool FC beating Burnley on Saturday to keep their title challenge alive.
“Liverpool need to win this game and they need to score early because the longer the game goes on, the bigger the panic,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“Before they kick off, they could be four points behind Man City so they need to start well because the pressure is going to be majorly on now.
“If they draw this game, all of a sudden it could be three points and a bit of goal difference so it is a massive football match for Liverpool.”
Merson added: “I’ve always said this league is going to be about who plays first and who plays second and you want to be playing first because it can take its toll.
“I think Burnley will be alright in the Premier League, but they’ve got to be careful.
“They had a great result against Tottenham but got well beaten by Newcastle and Crystal Palace so they have to be careful but I would expect them to be alright.”
Liverpool FC managed to beat Burnley in their meeting earlier this season thanks to goals James Milner, Roberto Firmino and Xherdan Shaqiri.
That win came at a cost after Virgil van Dijk’s centre-half partner Joe Gomez suffered an injury at Turf Moor.
Liverpool FC were held to a 1-1 draw with Burnley in their last Premier League meeting at Anfield in September 2017.
Klopp’s side are looking to win their first Premier League title.
