Rio Ferdinand: Why I love this Man United star
The Man United legend praises Marcus Rashford's mentality after his penalty in a 3-1 victory over PSG on Wednesday night
Rio Ferdinand has praised Marcus Rashford after the Manchester United striker’s decisive penalty in Wednesday night’s 3-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain.
The Red Devils were left with a difficult assignment to reach the Champions League quarter-finals following a 2-0 loss to PSG in the first leg of their round of 16 tie at Old Trafford last month.
However, Romelu Lukaku put Manchester United in a position to reach the last eight after the Belgium international scored twice in the first half at Parc des Princes either side of Juan Bernat’s goal.
The 20-time English champions appeared to be heading out of the competition despite their valiant fightback in the French capital but the visitors were handed a lifeline in stoppage time.
Slovenian referee Damir Skomina awarded a penalty with help from VAR after Presnel Kimpembe was penalised for handling Diogo Dalot’s shot in PSG’s area.
Rashford stepped up and assumed responsibility to take the spot-kick despite other senior players being on the pitch before the England international dispatched his effort past legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.
Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand was quick to praise Rashford’s mentality after his dramatic winner.
“I love Rashford man, I love Rashford. ‘Give me the ball, I’m taking it’,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.
“What I loved about this was that when this penalty was given there was no other person on that pitch who was getting that ball.
“He went there and said ‘this is me, this is my stage. I want this responsibility’ and that is the difference between good players and top players. This kid is a top player.”
Manchester United will return to Premier League actions with a trip to Arsenal on Sunday.
