Gary Neville took to Twitter to give his seal of approval to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s permanent appointment as Manchester United manager on Thursday.

The Norwegian head coach signed a three-year deal with the 20-time English champions after weeks of speculation surrounding his future at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer won 14 of his 19 games in all competitions after the retired striker took over the reins from Jose Mourinho on an interim basis back in December.

The Red Devils started 11 points adrift of the top four but 10 wins from 13 league games has left Manchester United in fifth place and two points adrift of Arsenal.

Manchester United managed to beat Arsenal and Chelsea FC on the road in the FA Cup to reach the quarter-finals before a surprise 2-1 loss to Wolves.

Arguably his biggest achievement so far was leading Manchester United into the Champions League last eight following a stunning 3-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain at Parc des Princes earlier this month.

Former Manchester United defender Neville admitted that he didn’t expect Solskjaer to be so successful when he was initially took over – but added his delight at the permanent appointment.

Neville wrote on Twitter: “I’m delighted for Ole. I didn’t think this would happen when he was appointed.

“However, the results and spirit in the club have been incredible since he arrived and he deserves it. He now needs support in the transfer market in terms of finance and the right resource!”

Earlier on Thursday, the Sky Sports pundit pleaded with Manchester United to appoint Solskjaer before he was officially confirmed as the full-time boss.

Neville added: “I thought United would take the international break to appoint Ole. I’m not sure what the plan is now! Games coming thick and fast so no ideal time to announce without a big distraction to matches. Let’s hope for a snap announcement today!!👹”

Manchester United will take on Spanish giants FC Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-finals next month.
