Martin Keown raves about Man United star ahead of Arsenal clash
The Arsenal legend was impressed with Chris Smalling's display in Manchester United's 3-1 win in Paris
Martin Keown has praised Chris Smalling’s performance at Paris Saint-Germain ahead of the meeting between Arsenal and Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.
The England international started the Champions League clash against Victor Lindelof in the heart of the Manchester United defence.
Smalling didn’t feature in Manchester United’s 2-0 loss to PSG in the first leg of their round of 16 clash at Old Trafford last month.
However, the 29-year-old produced a resolute performance alongside Lindelof on Wednesday night to give Manchester United the platform to cause an upset.
The Red Devils star managed to keep Kylian Mbappe relatively quiet as goals from Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford sealed a 3-1 win and secured their progress on away goals.
Asked to name which Manchester United players impressed in their 3-1 win at PSG on Wednesday night during his question and answer session on the Daily Mail, former Arsenal star Keown said:
“If you ask Kylian Mbappe to name his most difficult opponent this season, he would surely say Chris Smalling.
“The United defender marshalled him well and – crucially – matched him for pace.
“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is getting excellent performances from all of his players.”
Manchester United will take on Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday as both clubs look to assert control over the top-four race.
The Red Devils have only managed to finish in the top four on two occasions since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.
Smalling was part of Ferguson’s last title-winning squad when the Red Devils beat Manchester City to the title five and a half years ago.
