Rio Ferdinand: The signings Man United should be making this summer
Rio Ferdinand has his say on the signings Man United should be targeting this summer
Rio Ferdinand believes that there is specific type of player that Manchester United must sign in the summer transfer window.
The Red Devils are likely to be linked with a number of different recruits in the next few weeks and months as attentions begin to turn towards the summer window.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is being widely tipped to take over at Manchester United on a permanent basis after having been brought in as Jose Mourinho’s successor on a temporary deal back in December.
While it remains to be seen whether the club will indeed appoint the Norwegian or not, former Manchester United defender Ferdinand feels that the Red Devils should already be thinking about the summer.
And the England legend believes that Manchester United should only be making moves for “hungry” players who have the right attitude to be a success at Old Trafford.
Speaking in an interview quoted by the Manchester Evening News, Ferdinand said: “Ole gets a blank canvas now to go into the club, do what he wants to do and move it forward.
“It doesn’t matter how many players because the turnover has been so great over the last seven or eight years. It’s what players you get – because you have to get the right players.
“Players who are fit to play for Manchester United, players who play off the front foot, players who are brave. There’s a DNA there that should be going through a player who goes to Man United.
“Hunger needs to be brought into that squad. I look at the squads I was in, there were hungry people in there.
“Forget abilities sometimes. Are you hungry enough? Have you got a desire to come in and improve yourself and try to improve this team with respect to what has gone on before you?”
He continued: “I’ve seen players, who have come in the door in previous seasons, and they aren’t fitting that DNA. I would have said, before they come through the door, ‘He ain’t a Man United player’.
“So it’s not how many, it’s who, which ones? The right ones, are they going to be coming through the door?
“And if United do get a sporting director, they have to all be on the same page. Because if it’s a sporting director buying players that Ole isn’t fancying or into, it doesn’t work.”
Meanwhile, Manchester United are currently preparing for their crunch clash against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
The Red Devils head into the return leg of their last 16 clash after having lost the first game 2-0 at Old Trafford to dampen their chances of reaching the quarter-finals.
