Solskjaer urged to let 30-year-old who ‘doesn’t add much’ to Man United leave
Man United legend Andrei Kanchelskis wants to see Juan Mata leave Old Trafford in the summer transfer window
Manchester United need to offload Juan Mata in the summer, according to club legend Andrei Kanchelskis.
The Spain international has been forced to sit out Manchester United’s last four games due to a hamstring problem that he sustained last month.
Mata was forced off in the first half of Manchester United’s goalless draw with Liverpool FC with a suspected issue with his hamstring.
The 30-year-old has struggled to hold down a regular starting spot in the Red Devils team under both Jose Mourinho and his replacement Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this term.
Mata has scored two goals and has made two assists in 12 starts and six substitute appearances in the Premier League.
The former Chelsea FC midfielder’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the 2018-19 season, meaning Mata will be a free agent in the summer as things stand.
And ex-Manchester United midfielder Kanchelskis believes that the Red Devils should allow Mata’s exit in the 2019 summer transfer window.
“I think it’s time for Mata to move on from Man United,” Kanchelskis told bWIN.
“He’s not been able to replicate the same form he had at Chelsea, but he’s also had a tough time with being used very sporadically, whilst being part of a very unsettled Man United squad.
“Mata doesn’t add too much to what Man United already have and I think he needs to move on in order to re-spark his career.
“He’s fairly far down on the pecking order and only really seems to play games when others are injured.”
Manchester United were impressive 3-1 winners against PSG in the second leg of their round of 16 clash in the Champions League last week.
The Red Devils are in fifth place in the Premier League table and two points adrift of Arsenal, who occupy the final Champions League spot.
