Gary Lineker reacts to Man United’s 3-1 win at PSG
The Spurs legend reacts to Manchester United's stunning comeback at PSG to seal their place in the Champions League last eight
Gary Lineker took to Twitter to congratulate Manchester United on making European history after overturning a 2-0 deficit to beat Paris Saint-Germain on away goals on Wednesday night.
The Red Devils had been left with what appeared to be an unsurmountable task after PSG were comfortable 2-0 winners against Manchester United in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie last month.
Goals from Kylian Mbappe and Presnel Kimpembe had all but sealed PSG’s progress to the quarter-finals in the eyes of most pundits.
But given Manchester United’s domestic form, there was hope of a potential fightback and Romelu Lukaku required a mere two minutes to halve the deficit when he capitalised on a loose pass to finish from a tight angle.
PSG were level in the 12th minute when Juan Bernat managed to get on the end of Kylian Mbappe’s cross and reassert their control of the tie.
But Buffon’s poor handling presented Lukaku with the chance to double his tally after the PSG goalkeeper parried a shot in the Belgian striker’s path before half-time.
Manchester United left it late to secure the decisive goal in the tie and required some help from VAR.
Referee Damir Skomina adjudged Kimpembe to have handled Diogo Dalot’s attempt in added time and Slovenian official awarded a penalty after consulting the video on the touchline.
And Marcus Rashford fired a confident finish past Buffon from the spot to seal a 3-1 win on the night and secure their progression on away goals.
Former Spurs striker Lineker took to Twitter to give his reaction to a stunning performance from Manchester United.
Lineker wrote on Twitter: “Rashford scores brilliantly and bravely from the spot and @ManUtd are the first team in Champions League/European Cup history to lose at home by 2 goals in the knockout stage and go through in the 2nd leg. Wow!”
His BT Sport colleague Jermaine Jenas singled out Lukaku and Rashford for praise on social media.
Jenas added: “Big players deliver when it really matters, unbelievable from United tonight 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 #PSGMUN”
Manchester United haven’t won the Champions League since 2008 when Sir Alex Ferguson’s side beat Chelsea FC.
