BT Sport pundit raves about ‘clinical’ Man United after 3-1 win at PSG
Owen Hargreaves praises Manchester United for a "clinical" performance at PSG to seal their place in the last eight
Owen Hargreaves hailed Manchester United’s tenacious performance after Wednesday night’s 3-1 win at Paris Saint-Germain booked their place in the Champions League quarter-finals.
The 20-time English champions appeared to be out of contention for a last-eight spot after goals from Presnel Kimpembe and Kylian Mbappe sealed a 2-0 win for PSG in the first leg at Old Trafford last month.
However, Romelu Lukaku gave Manchester United early hope of a comeback when he netted in the second minute at Parc des Princes after the home side’s defensive mix-up.
Juan Bernat levelled for the hosts when the wing-back managed to get on the end of Kylian Mbappe’s cross in the 12th minute to seemingly end talk of a Manchester United comeback.
However, Gianluigi Buffon’s rare error allowed Lukaku to level before half-time and leave Manchester United needing one more goal to progress to the quarter-finals.
And referee Damir Skomina awarded Manchester United an added-time penalty when he adjudged Kimpembe to have handled Diogo Dalot’s shot after consultation with VAR.
Marcus Rashford managed to keep his nerve despite a long wait and fire past Buffon to seal a 3-1 win and ensure their progress on away goals.
Former Red Devils midfielder Hargreaves hailed a special Manchester United performance in the French capital.
“United stayed in there,” Hargreaves told BT Sport. “They were effective, they were clinical.
“With all those injuries it is an astonishing result. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has the magic touch, I’m very proud of Ole and all these players – they really deserve this.”
Manchester United will take on Arsenal at The Emirates on Sunday.
