Unai Emery names two Arsenal stars who have improved this season
Arsenal manager Unai Emery has been impressed with Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira this season
Unai Emery believes Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira have made big improvements at Arsenal this season.
The Gunners signed Torreira in a £25m deal from Italian side Sampdoria in the 2018 summer transfer window after the South American midfielder impressed at the World Cup in Russia.
Torreira didn’t take long to win over the Arsenal supporters thanks to his bustling style in the middle of the park, while the summer signing added a never-say-die attitude to the team.
Emery recruited virtual unknown Guendouzi in a £7m deal from Laurent Koscielny’s former club Lorient in what was initially presumed to be a signing with one eye on the future.
However, the 20-year-old has already established himself as a first-team regular, with a respectable 22 starts and nine substitute appearances in the Premier League this term.
And Arsenal manager Emery spoke about the improvement of both Guendouzi and Torreira in their first seasons at the north London side.
“I take a lot of satisfaction from players progressing individually and the improvement of their statistics,” Emery told Sky Sports ahead of Sunday’s 3-0 loss to Leicester.
“I think there are a lot of players who have made progress this season. There’s Matteo Guendouzi.
“There’s Lucas Torreira. There’s also the statistics of the goal-scorers together – Laca (Alexandre Lacazette) as much as Auba (Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang).
“They are both scoring an important number of goals.”
The Gunners will face La Liga side Valencia in the Europa League semi-final with a place in the showpiece in Baku’s Olympic Stadium up for grabs.
Emery replaced Wenger at the end of the 2017-18 season.
