Ian Wright: What I really think of Arsenal manager’s treatment of Mesut Ozil

Ian Wright has admitted that he has found Unai Emery’s treatment of Mesut Ozil at Arsenal “uncomfortable” to watch this season.

The former Germany international has struggled to secure a regular starting spot in the Gunners team throughout Emery’s debut campaign in charge of the north London side.

Emery has made Ozil his captain on a number of occasions in the current season, but for the most part, the German has been on the bench or left out of the manager’s squad.

The 30-year-old has started just 17 games in the Premier League this term – scoring four goals and making two assists before this weekend’s trip to Everton.

Ozil has been in and out of Arsenal’s Europa League squad despite his lack of game time in the English top flight.

The World Cup winner has netted one goal in six appearances in the Uefa competition.

And it seems that former Arsenal striker Wright isn’t happy with Emery’s handling of the German playmaker.

“The way he was being treated by Unai Emery – there was too much negativity around him,” Wright is quoted as saying by Metro.

“He was trying, he does what he does and that’s how he plays. To leave him out completely and say the things he’s saying about tactically and his physicality I found that very uncomfortable.

“I don’t think Mesut’s learned any lessons he will continue to play how he plays.

“If you look at his stats he runs back as much as anyone else he does his fair share of that kind of stuff.

“The way he plays he’s too good to not be involved at all. Whatever people are saying about that he doesn’t do it against the top six.

“I’m not interested because against teams like Newcastle and the rest he will do it and that’s where you’re going to pick points up.”

Arsenal signed Ozil in a £42.5m deal from La Liga side Real Madrid in 2013 in what was a watershed moment for the north London side as Arsene Wenger finally divulged a massive fee on a signing.

The German star has won three FA Cup titles with the Gunners but Arsenal haven’t come close to securing the Premier League or the Champions League trophy since his move.
