Arsenal interested in surprise swoop for Tottenham star – report
Arsenal are keeping tabs on Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld ahead of a summer move, according to a report
Arsenal are considering a shock swoop to sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld from under the noses of Manchester United, according to a report in England.
The Sun, as quoted by talkSPORT, is reporting that the Gunners are ready to launch a bid to sign the Belgium international in a cut-price deal at the end of the season.
The same article states that Alderweireld will be available to sign for £25m after Spurs activated a clause by extending the 30-year-old’s contract at the start of the 2018-19 season.
According to the same story, Arsenal are keeping tabs on the Belgian star’s situation given that Unai Emery has a limited budget to spend in the summer.
Arsenal could face competition from Manchester City and Manchester United given that both clubs are looking to reinforce their defence in the summer, the report adds.
Alderweireld has established himself as one of the Premier League’s top centre-halves over the past three or four seasons at the north London side.
The Spurs defender has forged a formidable partnership alongside his compatriot Jan Vertonghen in the middle of Mauricio Pochettino’s back four.
Alderweireld previously played for Southampton during a season-long loan from Atletico Madrid before he opted to complete a permanent switch to Spurs in a £11.5m deal in 2015.
