Gary Lineker took to social media to lavish praise on Lionel Messi after the Argentine inspired FC Barcelona to a 3-0 win to knock Manchester United out of the Champions League.

Trailing 1-0 from the first leg of the quarter-final tie at Old Trafford last week, Manchester United fell behind on the night in the 16th minute when Messi drilled home his shot into the bottom-left corner.

Messi then made it 2-0 in the 20th minute when his shot caught out David De Gea, who should have been able to make a routine save.

Philippe Coutinho made it 3-0 in the 61st minute when he fired home a delightful third for the Catalan side and add gloss to the scoreline.

England legend Lineker was impressed by Messi’s performance and singled him out for praise on Twitter after his opener: “The incomparable Messi gives @FCBarcelona the lead. The nutmeg alone was exquisite, the finish sublime. Nobody else can do this s**t.”

Then, after Coutinho had made it 3-0, Lineker added in a separate Tweet: “Coutinho makes it 3 with a gorgeous strike.”

Manchester United will now switch their attentions back towards Premier League affairs and their trip to Everton on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils are seeking Champions League qualification for next season via a top-four finish this term.

Manchester United are currently in sixth place in the Premier League table and two points behind fourth-placed Arsenal with five games left to play this season.
