Jurgen Klopp is hoping that Virgil van Dijk’s injury isn’t serious ahead of Liverpool FC’s trip to Southampton on Friday night.

The Reds defender appeared to pick up a knock towards the end of Liverpool FC’s 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend.

Van Dijk was caught on camera holding his right shin after the Netherlands international had managed to force Moussa Sissoko into a rash attempt with the goal at his mercy.

Liverpool FC can ill afford to lose their club record signing given his excellent performances at the heart of Jurgen Klopp’s defence this term.

The Reds have the best defensive record in the Premier League after conceding 19 times in 32 games thanks in part to Van Dijk.

Speaking at his post-match media conference about Van Dijk’s injury scare, Klopp was hopeful that the Dutch defender would be available for Friday’s trip to Southampton.

“We have to see. I asked him and I think it was in the counter-attack situation when Sissoko hit him,” Klopp said at his post-match news conference. “I don’t know if he twisted it or it is a knock.

“He was walking to the interviews with a big ice pack. I hope it’s nothing serious but I don’t know yet.”

Liverpool FC eased to a dramatic 2-1 victory over third-placed Tottenham at Anfield on Sunday evening.

Lucas Moura’s 70th-minute goal cancelled out Roberto Firmino’s opening goal in the Premier League clash.

Toby Alderweireld scored an inadvertent winner for the home side after Hugo Lloris pushed Mo Salah’s header into the path of the Spurs defender in added time at the end of the Premier League clash.
