The Cameroon international has excelled in a centre-half role alongside club-record signing Virgil van Dijk.
The 27-year-old hasn’t put a foot wrong since being promoted to the first team following Joe Gomez’s injury back in November.
Matip has started 15 Premier League games in the current campaign to help keep Liverpool FC on track for the Premier League title in the second half of the season.
The towering centre-half has managed to maintain a starting spot in Jurgen Klopp’s team ahead of World Cup finalist Dejan Lovren.
The former Schalke defender is set to come under pressure for a place in starting line-up in the coming weeks following Gomez’s return from injury.
And former Liverpool FC striker Owen heaped praise on Matip for his composed performances in the Reds team this season.
“He’s under pressure now, now Gomez is back fit,” Owen told BT Sport.
“You’d have to think it’s his position that Gomez could take.
“But Gomez not played many minutes just yet, so he’s got the shirt. [Dejan] Lovren apparently is not feeling well tonight.
“He’s been brilliant this season, Matip, because I didn’t expect it from him if I’m honest.
“I never really looked at him and thought ‘he’s a Liverpool starter’ in the past.
“But he’s got the shirt and he’s not let it go.”
Matip was part of the Liverpool FC team that eased to a 4-1 victory over FC Porto in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday night.
The Reds will return to Premier League action with a clash against Cardiff City in Wales on Sunday as Liverpool FC look to maintain a two-point lead at the top of the table.
