Jordan Henderson has revealed that his conversation with Jurgen Klopp after the international break led the Liverpool FC manager to start his captain in an advanced midfield role.

Liverpool FC supporters have become accustomed to the England international being deployed in a holding midfield role over the past couple of seasons.

However, Henderson has found his first-team opportunities somewhat limited this season due to the summer arrival of Brazil international Fabinho.

The 28-year-old started in a more advanced role for the visit of FC Porto in the first leg of their Champions League at Anfield on Tuesday night.

Henderson acquitted himself well in the European tie as goals from Naby Keita and Roberto Firmino sealed a commanding first-leg lead.

The Liverpool FC captain shed light on Klopp’s decision to use Henderson in an unfamiliar role for the Champions League clash on Tuesday night.

“I don’t think the manager had thought about it too much until I mentioned it to him,” Henderson is quoted as saying by Sky Sports.

“Me and the gaffer just had a conversation. Obviously he had seen the England games and I felt good playing in that position.

“I suppose when I spoke to the manager, it was (to say) that I do feel more natural in that position: I played there for a long time, I was sort of a box-to-box midfielder when the manager first came.

“It was something that he said he would think about. I can do both positions and he sees that I can do both. It’s basically what he wants and he needs from the team.

“I want to keep contributing to the team. When I play the deeper position my role changes and I try to do different things and I can’t affect it as much in the final third.

“The manager wants me in both positions which is good for me and for the team. It’s all about putting the team first, I know that but at the same time I want to contribute as much as I can to the team.

“I feel as though I can do that more in a further-forward position.”

Henderson has scored one goal and has made one assist in 34 appearances in all competitions in the current campaign.

Liverpool FC will return to Premier League action with a home clash against bitter rivals Chelsea FC on Sunday afternoon.

The Reds are sitting in top spot in the Premier League table and two points adrift of defending champions Manchester City ahead of what promises to be an enthralling end to the title race.
