Jurgen Klopp was impressed with Jordan Henderson’s performance in a more advanced midfield role in Liverpool FC’s 2-0 victory over FC Porto at Anfield on Tuesday night.

The Reds welcomed the Portuguese side to Merseyside for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final as Klopp’s men looked to get a stranglehold on the tie.

Guinea international Naby Keita broke the deadlock within five minutes with a deflected strike, before Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino doubled the home side’s lead ahead of half-time.

Henderson attempted 55 passes throughout the Champions League clash, 47 of which were accurate to help Liverpool FC penetrate FC Porto in the final third.

The Liverpool FC captain touched the ball 72 times throughout the 90 minutes, highlighting his influence during Liverpool FC’s 2-0 win.

With Fabinho playing in a holding role at the base of the midfield, Henderson was asked to play further forward and support Klopp’s front three.

Speaking at his post-match media conference about Henderson’s performance in the middle of the park, Klopp declared himself pleased with his captain’s display.

“It would be cool if I could ask a player, ‘Please, play these kind of passes’ and we score immediately with that,” Klopp told his post-match news conference.

“Hendo is a brilliant player and I am really happy that he can show that, that he can show it again. He obviously likes the position and so it was my fault that for one and half years he was in position No.6… sorry for that! But we needed him there.”

Klopp added: “It was a really good performance. The second goal was brilliant and he had the cross for Sadio’s goal as well, and if it was an inch offside it was still a brilliant cross. Brilliant play and I liked it.”

Liverpool FC will welcome bitter rivals Chelsea FC to Anfield in the Premier League on Sunday evening.

The Reds are sitting at the top of the Premier League table and two points ahead of Manchester City, although the defending champions have played a game less than Liverpool FC.
