Jamie Carragher has admitted that Naby Keita has endured a disappointing first season at Liverpool FC.

The Merseyside outfit added Keita to their squad in the summer to bolster their midfield options ahead of the 2018-19 Premier League season.

Liverpool FC agreed a £48m deal with RB Leipzig to sign Keita in 2017 but the Reds loaned the Guinea international back to the German club.

Having to wait 12 months to see their new signing in a Reds shirt only heightened the sense of anticipation ahead of Keita’s arrival at Anfield.

Keita scored his first Premier League goal for Liverpool FC in a 3-1 victory over Southampton at St Mary’s last week.

The 24-year-old has scored one goal and has made one assist in 23 games in the Premier League, and he has failed to make any notable contributions in four appearances in the Champions League.

The Reds have been accused of lacking creativity in midfield at times this season, with Jurgen Klopp reliant on Jordan Henderson and James Milner.

And former Liverpool FC defender Carragher has now admitted that he expected much more from Keita ahead of his big-money switch to the 18-time English champions.

“There is no doubt it’s been a slow burner with Naby Keita,” Carragher told Monday Night Football on Sky Sports. “A lot more was expected really and we haven’t seen that.

“But what he did do in this game [at Southampton], aside from the goal, he actually got in the box.

“He had nine touches in the box, the most by any Liverpool midfielder this season.”

Carragher added: “Before seeing him in a Liverpool shirt, the word that kept coming back was that he dribbled at defences. This was maybe a sign of that because he should have got a penalty as well by driving at the defence. That’s the Keita we were told was coming.

“I still don’t think he was out of this world in this game, some of his touches around the halfway line were pretty poor, but it was a sign of things to come and what could be added to this midfield.

“That’s what Liverpool fans have been waiting for now for six months.”

Liverpool FC are sitting at the top of the Premier League table and two points ahead of Manchester City in the title race.
