Jurgen Klopp: What I think about Naby Keita’s progress at Liverpool FC
Liverpool FC boss Jurgen Klopp was pleased with Naby Keita's display in Tuesday night's 2-0 win over FC Porto
Jurgen Klopp has admitted that he is encouraged by Naby Keita’s recent performances after the midfielder’s slow start to his Liverpool FC career.
The Guinea international was named in Klopp’s starting line up for the visit of FC Porto in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday night.
Keita had earned a place in the German head coach’s starting XI after the African midfielder scored his first Premier League goal in a 3-1 victory over Southampton at St Mary’s last week.
The summer signing justified his inclusion inside five minutes of the Champions League tie when Keita’s strike was deflected past FC Porto goalkeeper Iker Casillas.
Keita produced a bustling performance in the middle of the park with two shots on goal, 88 touches of the ball, 55 successful passes and eight completed tackles.
The Guinea international has given Liverpool FC supporters reason to be positive about the former RB Leipzig midfielder after an underwhelming start to his Anfield career.
However, Klopp was encouraged by Keita’s ever-present display in the heart of the Liverpool FC team for Tuesday night’s 2-0 victory over FC Porto.
“I think Naby was a couple of times a little bit unlucky with the first one or two situations and then he had to find his way back in the game,” Klopp said at his post-match news conference.
“From the start he was immediately there. We hoped it would be like this because in the last game he got better and better and better minute by minute so we wanted to build on that.
“He looked really, really good tonight – all of them, really hard working and good footballing playing with a lot of good passes.
“[Naby’s] goal was brilliant, I loved it; it was deflected, yes, but the situation how we did it, it was the half-space we wanted to use. The boys did that really well, so it was a really good performance.”
Liverpool FC will take on Chelsea FC in the Premier League at Anfield on Sunday before the Reds make the return trip to FC Porto next week.
