Sir Alex Ferguson has backed Liverpool FC to beat Manchester City to the Premier League title this season, according to former Stoke striker Jonathan Walters.

The Merseyside outfit were 2-0 winners against Chelsea FC at Anfield on Sunday afternoon thanks to goals from Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah in the second half.

Liverpool FC are sitting in top spot in the Premier League table and two points ahead of defending champions Manchester City, having played one game more than the Citizens.

The Reds are looking to win their first Premier League title, having gone through a barren run during Manchester United success in the 1990s and 2000s.

BBC Sport pundit Walters lifted the lid on a conversation with his former team-mate Phil Bardsley where the ex-Manchester United defender revealed who Ferguson is backing to win the Premier League title.

“I was chatting with Phil Bardsley and I’m going to drop a name here, he was sat with Sir Alex Ferguson,” Walters told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Football Daily podcast.

“He sat with him and he thinks Liverpool are going win it. He thinks Liverpool [will win it] because he thinks United will get something out of the City game.”

Liverpool FC have previously finished in the runners-up spot in the Premier League title race on three occasions in 2002, 2009 and 2014.

The Reds ended up in second place behind Ferguson’s Manchester United side in 2009 despite pushing their bitter rivals all the way in the title race.

Liverpool FC – who travel to Cardiff City on Sunday – have managed to navigate tough fixtures against Tottenham and Chelsea FC in recent weeks to keep their title challenge on track.
