Gary Neville felt Naby Keita benefited from some good fortune after the Liverpool FC midfielder broke his deadlock at Southampton on Friday night.

The Reds midfielder was named in Jurgen Klopp’s starting line up for just 13th time in the Premier League this season as the German coach opted for the summer signing ahead of Jordan Henderson or James Milner.

Keita was guilty of recklessly squandering possession a couple of times in the first half and the former RB Leipzig midfielder looked nervous on his first start since 10 March.

The Guinea international justified his inclusion when he headed past Angus Gunn at the end of the first half to cancel out Shane Long’s early goal at St Mary’s.

Keita’s header was his first Premier League goal of the season, having made just one assist in his previous 26 appearances in the top flight in the current campaign.

Goals from Mohamed Salah and Jordan Henderson completed the comeback in the final 10 minutes at St Mary’s.

Former Manchester United defender Neville praised Alexander-Arnold for his role in what the Sky Sports pundit felt was a fortuitous first goal for Keita.

“Liverpool have been at their best when Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold are delivering the ball into the box,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“Trent sets it up like a free-kick. Keita was brought into the team. It was a little bit of good fortune but it was a much-needed goal.”

Liverpool FC agreed a £48m fee with RB Leipzig to sign Keita in 2017 before the midfielder linked up with the Reds squad last summer after spending the 2017-18 season on loan at RB Leipzig.
