Pundit explains why Liverpool FC’s ‘Rolls Royce’ deserves PFA award
Former Chelsea FC winger Pat Nevin believes Liverpool FC's Virgil van Dijk is the standout contender for the PFA player of the year award
Pat Nevin believes Liverpool FC defender Virgil van Dijk is deserving of the PFA player of the year award this season.
The Netherlands international has been impressive throughout the Premier League campaign to help Jurgen Klopp’s side challenge for the top-flight crown this season.
Van Dijk has managed to elevate the performances of his Liverpool FC defensive team-mates since his £75m move to the Anfield outfit from Southampton almost 18 months ago.
Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip have all flourished alongside the world’s most expensive defender this term.
Liverpool FC have kept 18 clean sheets in 34 games this season, while Klopp’s side have only conceded 20 times in the Premier League.
Nevin was aware of Van Dijk’s potential during the Netherlands international’s brief stint at Celtic before the centre-half moved to Southampton in 2014.
And the Chelsea FC legend isn’t surprised to see Van Dijk flourishing at Liverpool FC.
“Van Dijk has done all the things I thought he was going to do five years ago when he was at Celtic,” Nevin told BBC Sport.
“I spoke to a lot of people about him and was just really surprised that none of the big six clubs took him before Southampton did in 2015 because it was so obvious, he is just a Rolls Royce.”
Nevin added: “His positional sense is just brilliant – he has got unbelievable pace which he rarely has to use, and he is always in the right place for crosses.
“He has been brilliant but I suspect that he will be better next season – he can score from free-kicks and get more goals with his head too.”
Liverpool FC were 4-1 winners against FC Porto in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday night.
The Reds will take on La Liga side FC Barcelona for a place in the Champions League final for the second successive season.
Liverpool FC lost 3-1 to Real Madrid in the Champions League final last term, although Loris Karius’ inept display in goal contributed largely to the defeat.
