Arsenal legend Martin Keown explains why he is pleased that Virgil van Dijk is a Liverpool FC player
Martin Keown has admitted that he is delighted Virgil van Dijk opted to move to Liverpool FC ahead of Manchester City in January 2018.
The Netherlands international became the world’s most expensive defender when Liverpool FC signed Van Dijk in a £75m deal from Southampton almost 16 months ago.
Liverpool FC managed to see off competition from Manchester City sign Van Dijk to finally bolster their leaky defence under Jurgen Klopp.
The former Celtic manager has been a revelation at Liverpool FC after having transformed the Reds defence into the best in the Premier League.
Van Dijk has managed to improve the performance level of the defenders around him, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez all excelling alongside the Dutchman.
Liverpool FC are challenging Manchester City for the Premier League title as Pep Guardiola’s side look to maintain their stranglehold on the top-flight crown.
And former Arsenal defender Keown has now expressed his relief that Van Dijk opted to move to Liverpool FC rather than join Manchester City.
“I just think it is time for people to be reminded how important defending is, and Van Dijk is the one – he is the top defender,” Keown told BBC Sport.
“He is just class, isn’t he?
“He purrs around the pitch, in possession or out of possession, he is a mountain in the air and has taken on the responsibility, at this time in his career to try to lead Liverpool to the title.
“That’s because he wants to be a winner.”
“I am just glad he didn’t go to City,” Keown added.
“Because he could have gone there and we wouldn’t have had a brilliant title race like this one if he had.”
Van Dijk will be hoping to win the Champions League at the second time of asking this season.
Liverpool FC’s 6-1 aggregate win over FC Porto sealed a place in the Champions League semi-finals.
The Reds will take on FC Barcelona for a place in the Madrid showpiece.
