Emile Heskey believes Virgil van Dijk is the first player since Jamie Carragher to bring real leadership to the Liverpool FC defence.

The Netherlands international has been a key player in the Liverpool FC team since his £75m move to Anfield from Southampton in the 2018 January transfer window.

Jurgen Klopp made Van Dijk the most expensive defender in the world in order to land his long-term defensive target following some ups and downs in their pursuit of the Dutch star.

The 27-year-old has transformed the Liverpool FC defence into the best in the Premier League thanks to his commanding performances at the back in Klopp’s side.

Van Dijk has managed to bring out the best in his team-mates in the current campaign as defenders such as Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson thrive alongside the Dutchman.

Now, former Liverpool FC striker Heskey has likened Van Dijk’s leadership style to Carragher.

“Virgil van Dijk is the one player in the team who is a leader, and they haven’t had that since Jamie Carragher left,” Heskey told Betoclock.com.

“[He is] someone who barks out orders and gets them out of sticky situations.

“He’s the player that team-mates can look up to and he’s the guy that they rely on.”

Liverpool FC are sitting at the top of the Premier League table and two points ahead of Manchester City following their 3-1 victory at Southampton on Friday night.

The Reds are looking to win their first Premier League title this season, having finished in second place on three previous occasions under three different managers.

Van Dijk was part of the Liverpool FC team that lost 3-1 to Real Madrid in the Champions League final last term.
