Virgil van Dijk previews Liverpool FC v FC Barcelona
Virgil van Dijk looks ahead to Liverpool FC's Champions League semi-final clash against FC Barcelona
Virgil van Dijk admits that he and his Liverpool FC team-mates will have their work cut out when they take on FC Barcelona in the Champions League semi-finals.
The Reds booked their place in the last four of Europe’s elite club competition with an impressive 4-1 win over FC Porto in Portugal on Wednesday night, triumphing 6-1 on aggregate.
Goals from Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Van Dijk wrapped up a comfortable win for Jurgen Klopp’s men and set up a clash with FC Barcelona in the semi-finals.
The Merseyside outfit will now take on the Catalan giants later this month, with FC Barcelona having overcome Manchester United in the quarter-finals.
Liverpool FC are set to come up against the in-form Lionel Messi, who inspired FC Barcelona to an impressive 3-0 win over Manchester United at Camp Nou on Tuesday night.
And Reds defender Van Dijk has admitted that he is relishing the prospect of coming up against the likes of Messi and company in the semi-finals.
Speaking in an interview with Viasport Fotball, as quoted by Metro, Van Dijk said: “I don’t know [how to stop Messi], we’ll see. It’s going to be a great match-up for all of us.
“Obviously we’re very happy to be in the semi-final again and that’s the only thing I can say.
“It’s about doing it all together, it’s never 1 vs 1, it’s never just me against a particular striker.
“It’s always us against everyone and I think that’s the only way we can defend well. And it’s going to be very hard and I think he’s the best player in the world but we’ll see.”
Liverpool FC will first switch their attentions back towards Premier League affairs and their trip to Cardiff City on Sunday afternoon.
