Jurgen Klopp urged to sign top Premier League defender for Liverpool FC
Liverpool FC boss Jurgen Klopp needs to sign a centre-half to partner Virgil van Dijk, according to Steve Nicol
Liverpool FC manager Jurgen Klopp should consider signing Toby Alderweireld in the summer to partner Virgil van Dijk, Steve Nicol says.
The Belgium international is set to become a free agent at the end of the Premier League season, unless Spurs manage to convince the centre-half to commit to a new deal.
Alderweireld has been regularly linked with a move to Liverpool FC’s bitter rivals Manchester United over the past couple of seasons but a transfer is yet to materialise.
Liverpool FC managed to avoid dropping more points in the Premier League title race on Sunday afternoon when Alderweireld’s added-time own goal sealed a 2-1 win for the Reds.
The 29-year-old started his Premier League career at Southampton before Alderweireld went on to establish himself as one of the league’s best defenders over the past four seasons at Tottenham.
Now, former Liverpool FC defender Nicol has admitted that he would love to see Klopp sign Alderweireld to further improve Liverpool FC’s defence in the summer.
“One hundred per cent this guy’s going,” said Nicol, as quoted by the Daily Star.
“We just don’t know where it is.
“This is a player who I think most teams in the world would want as their centre-back.
“I wouldn’t mind him at Liverpool alongside Van Dijk, I think that would be a great pairing.”
Liverpool FC made Virgil van Dijk the most expensive defender in the world when the Reds signed the Netherlands international in a £75m deal in January 2018.
The Dutch star has managed to transform the Liverpool FC defence into the best in the Premier League over the past 12 months.
