Owen Hargreaves believes that Manchester United still have a good chance of reaching the Champions League semi-finals despite their disappointing 1-0 loss to FC Barcelona at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils fell behind in the 12th minute at Old Trafford when Luis Suarez’s shot deflected in off Luke Shaw to give the La Liga leaders the lead.

Despite FC Barcelona dominating possession for long spells, they were unable to find a second strike against Manchester United, who themselves failed to register a single shot on target.

And former Manchester United midfielder Hargreaves feels that the Red Devils are still in the tie heading into next week’s return leg in Spain.

“We were hoping for a show but it didn’t really materialise,” Hargreaves told BT Sport. “Neither of the goalkeepers really made many saves.

“Barca were slopping in possession but I think United were a bit sloppy themselves in the final third.

“Before the game, we asked if United could still be in it going into the second leg? And they are, without any question.

“I think we’ll see some more fireworks in that second leg.”

Manchester United – who appointed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as their new permanent manager recently – will return to Premier League action on Saturday night when they host West Ham United in the top flight.

The Red Devils are currently sixth as they eye Champions League qualification via a top-four finish for next season.
