Rio Ferdinand hails Scott McTominay after Man United’s 1-0 loss to FC Barcelona
Rio Ferdinand has his say after Man United's 1-0 loss to FC Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-final first leg
Rio Ferdinand highlighted Scott McTominay’s performance as a positive for Manchester United after their 1-0 loss to FC Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash on Wednesday night.
The 22-year-old started the game and completed the 90 minutes of the European showdown at Old Trafford as he produced an assured display for the Red Devils.
Manchester United headed into the game looking to return to winning ways after the disappointment of their 2-1 loss to Wolves in the Premier League last week.
FC Barcelona started brightly at Old Trafford and the visitors took the lead in the 12th minute when Luis Suarez’s shot deflected in off Luke Shaw.
However, Manchester United improved after going behind and headed in 1-0 down at the break.
The Red Devils battled hard in the second half but were unable to find an equaliser ahead of the return leg at Camp Nou next week.
Ferdinand was particularly impressed by McTominay’s performance on what was otherwise a disappointing night for the Red Devils.
Speaking after the game, former Manchester United defender Ferdinand told BT Sport: “I think he [McTominay] has added to his name. I thought he was very, very good. He was positive without the ball.
“He’s now become a player [who produces] performances in big games. In this game here, he’s proved to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that he can be trusted.”
Reflecting on the result itself, Ferdinand added: “Ole will be satisfied with today. They are within touching distance going into the second leg.”
Manchester United will return to Premier League action on Saturday night when they take on West Ham United at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils are currently embroiled in a race to finish in the top four this season, with Manchester United sixth in the table as things stand.
